Priority Issues
WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE OF IOWA
PROTECT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Iowa has long taken pride in strong public education, from K-12 to community colleges and Regents universities, yet recent funding increases of 1–1.5% have failed to meet growing needs. Schools require at least 4–5% annual increases to address pandemic impacts and fairly compensate educators. With state budget surpluses available, fully funding public education is essential to attract families and help every child succeed. READ MORE >>
AFFORDABLE CHILDCARE
Childcare is a complex issue affecting early education, workforce participation, and economic stability. When families can’t access or afford care, they can’t work, and providers struggle to raise wages due to thin margins. The pandemic highlighted that affordable, quality childcare is a societal necessity — not a luxury — requiring coordinated local, state, and federal solutions. ADDRESS IOWA'S WORKFORCE CRISIS
We have a workforce crisis. That is the case across much of the country, but it impacts Iowa particularly hard because of our ageing population, as well as the number of people, mostly women, who have – at least temporarily – dropped out of the workforce because of childcare-related issues. Iowa needs to address this issue and allow our workers the right to organize. READ MORE >>
LOCAL MUNICIPAL CONTROL
Iowa’s 1968 Home Rule Amendment empowered cities to govern local affairs through elected councils. Recently, however, state lawmakers have overridden locally passed ordinances and limited school board authority, undermining local control. Protecting home rule means respecting community decision-making and preventing state interference driven by narrow political agendas. LEARN MORE >>
LEGALIZE MARIJUANA
Iowa has fallen behind as other states legalize medical and recreational marijuana, capturing revenue while we enforce outdated laws. Low-THC limits and criminal penalties—often disproportionately affecting people of color—reflect a failed prohibition approach. It’s time to modernize policy, end unnecessary incarceration, and allow Iowa to benefit economically and socially. LEARN MORE >>
